| A Matter of Perception
Back in 1964 when I was in the first grade my teacher was Ms Wooten. You don't know her because she is from NC and of course that is where Iwent to school. She could be firm and yet have a fun gentle side to heras well. She made things exciting and always had a smile. I within thepast 5 years I had the opportunity to see Ms Wooten again and havelunch with her. She spoke of the changes in the classrooms and even thestudents and the parents as well. As one of the sub teachers in theschool system I can attest that one walks on egg shells when enteringthe classroom environment. Every word is listened to, every move isseen and every opportunity is taken by the students. When one fell onthe playground at Teachers Memorial Elementary, the teacher was thefirst there to assist not waiting for the Code staff to arrive. Theteacher would hold the child even if just a small bump and often caressthe childs head, maybe even a kiss to the forehead to sooth. When onefalls today, we are afraid to assist or comfort a student for fear of acharge of some kind being made against us! Today, even in high schoolsa teacher can have compassion and when a student comes to the one theytrust or spend more time with than their parents, they are the ones whohave to offer comfort,... some that is. It is unfortunate thatcompassion now has to be left out of the classroom towards students, for it is so lacking at home. More on this to come in the future if theowner of this site will allow it to continue. Comments on this may bemade to: manager@smyrnatn.us | | |
