A Matter of Perception
Back in 1964 when I was in the first grade my teacher was Ms Wooten.
You don't know her because she is from NC and of course that is where I
went to school. She could be firm and yet have a fun gentle side to her
as well. She made things exciting and always had a smile. I within the
past 5 years I had the opportunity to see Ms Wooten again and have
lunch with her. She spoke of the changes in the classrooms and even the
students and the parents as well. As one of the sub teachers in the
school system I can attest that one walks on egg shells when entering
the classroom environment. Every word is listened to, every move is
seen and every opportunity is taken by the students. When one fell on
the playground at Teachers Memorial Elementary, the teacher was the
first there to assist not waiting for the Code staff to arrive. The
teacher would hold the child even if just a small bump and often caress
the childs head, maybe even a kiss to the forehead to sooth. When one
falls today, we are afraid to assist or comfort a student for fear of a
charge of some kind being made against us! Today, even in high schools
a teacher can have compassion and when a student comes to the one they
trust or spend more time with than their parents, they are the ones who
have to offer comfort,... some that is. It is unfortunate that
compassion now has to be left out of the classroom towards students,
for it is so lacking at home. More on this to come in the future if the
owner of this site will allow it to continue. Comments on this may be
